What this is

The Tubatage started in 2009 with four tutors and twelve participants. Today more than a hundred players come every year, from Austria, Germany, Switzerland, South Tyrol and beyond, taught by over fifteen tutors. It is a pure tuba course — no trombone, no euphonium, no other low brass. As far as we know, there is nothing else quite like it in the German-speaking countries.

It stays deliberately familiar. You will be taught by professionals, you will play in ensembles, and in the evening you will sit together with people who chose the same enormous instrument you did.

Who it is for

• Children from the age of six, accompanied by an adult — there is a separate TubaKids programme
• Young players and adults, amateur and advanced
• Students and music teachers
• Anyone playing in a wind band who wants to get better at it

B flat tuba or F tuba, bass clef or treble clef — all welcome. You tell us what you play when you register, and we take it into account.

Every package includes group lessons, ensemble playing, the talk on instrument care, free entry to all exhibitions, coffee, tea, juice, water and cake on both afternoons, and entry to the prize draw. Meals and accommodation are booked separately — see below. Places are limited to 100 in total, and Premium and Master to ten each.

Staying and eating

There is one package that covers everything around the course: a room at the four-star Hotel Alte Post, a few minutes‘ walk from the school, plus both lunches and Saturday dinner.

Guesthouses and private rooms in the valley are available as well, and you are free to arrange your own accommodation. If you are travelling with family, Großarl is a walking valley at the edge of the Hohe Tauern National Park — there is plenty for them to do while you play.

Getting here

• By air: Salzburg Airport is about an hour away by car, Munich about two.
• By train: to St. Johann im Pongau, then bus 540 to Großarl — 24 minutes, hourly, and the stop is three minutes‘ walk from the school.
• By car: the school has an underground car park we may use free of charge.
• Guest Mobility Ticket: if you book any accommodation in the valley, you travel free on the Salzburg public transport network for the length of your stay.

A word about language

The teaching is in German. Most of our tutors speak English and are glad to do so — over the years we have had participants who spoke no German at all and went home happy. If you are unsure, write to me first and I will tell you honestly what to expect.
